HACKNEY NOW AND THEN
This is a book set to become a permanent work of reference which will be kept. It is not an £11 paperback destined to be read once and then consigned to the charity shop.
The pictures in it show how things have changed in the course of a single lifetime. Keep the book for fifteen years and it will have all changed again. The format is A4 landscape bound in hardback. The 314 pages contain over 1050 pictures, diagrams and comment. The majority of pictures are in colour but there is a compliment of black and white photographs too. Some black and whites have been coloured digitally. Most have been taken by the author over the years and there are contributions from other local photographers. Some are pictures supplied by Hackney Archives as a quid pro quo for the author’s own photographs to be consigned to the archive for use by the public in the future. Bearing in mind the author’s own origins there are nods throughout to some of the less fortunate who live in the borough today Accompanying the pictures are various facts and anecdotes, both in the form of recollection and an understanding of the modern realities and problems which face the Hackney of today.
It would make an ideal gift for anyone, not only for people who live in Hackney now but also for to those who left Hackney long ago and went further afield. An indespensible book for anyone affected even only slightly by nostalgia.
